STARNES, Lewis - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Lewis Starnes, Sr. son of Henry and Catherine Myers Starnes was born on a farm near Wallace, May 5, 1849.  He departed this life at his home near Hillsboro Tuesday morning October 30, 1934 at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 25 days. The early part of his life was spent in the vicinity of his birth, attending the common school at Wallace.  He also attended the Waveland Academy and taught school in Parke and Fountain counties for several years. On March 27, 1873 he was united in marriage to Miss Emily Edwards of Annapolis.  They went to housekeeping at Maple Plain, Minn but lived there only a short time. They returned to Fountain County where he has since resided with the exception of a few months spent in Colo on account of his health.  Five children were born to this union.  Mrs. Starnes passed away Nov 30, 1923 and one son, Otis died 30 years ago.  Mr. Starnes was a member of a family of 16 children.  He was identified with the Methodist Church of Hillsboro and in his more active years was greatly interested in Sunday School work, having been president of the Fountain County Sunday School Association for several years. He also served for 8 years on the Fountain County Council, serving during the war period.  On March 3, 1926 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Josie Riley of Hillsboro. The widow, 3 daughters, Mrs. Mamie Keeling and Mrs. Crete Keeling of Hillsborp, Mrs. Aura Trowbridge of Crawfordsville; one son, Charles B. of Hillsboro; seven grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, a brother, Charles Starnes, Sr of Hilllsboro and a sister, Mrs. Susan McGinnnis of Wallace survive. Mr. Starnes was of a very charitable nature, helping many in the time of need.  An indulgent father, a kind husband and a friendly neighbor has gone to his reward.
