STARNES, Charles - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Charles Starnes, Sr. son of Harry and Catherine Myers Starnes, was born on a farm in Jackson Township, Fountain County near Wallace, June 4, 1847.  Here he grew to manhood and March 7, 1869 he was united in marriage to Mary E. Edwards, and to this union 4 children were born, two sons and two daughters.  One daughter, Miss Carrie M. passed away March 24, 1891. After his marriage, he and his wife began housekeeping near Wallace where they resided for a few months, moving from there to Parke County, where they resided for a short time and then to the farm where he passed way having resided on that farm for a period of 66 years. Many years ago he united with the UB church at what was then known as the Harmony church a short distance South of Hillsboro.  During the existence of this church in his home vicinity he was a very active member of that church and his active member of that church and his home was always open to the entertainment of the ministers of that church.  He was a very successful farmer and for many years was very much interested in the culture of bees and whose advice and knowledge was much sought.  In his young manhood years he taught school but la3tr gave attention to work of his farm.  He was one of 16 children and is the last of the family to pass away.  He had been seriously illl for 3 weeks, during which time all was done for him that could be done, but without avail for in the evening hours of Thursday, July 9, he passed peacefully away at the age of 89 Years 1Month 5 Days.  He is survived and deeply mourned by his devoted wife, two sons, H.I. Starnes of near Waynetown; Lewie E. of near Hillsboro and one daughter, Miss Effie E. Starnes, who resided at home with her father and mother; four grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren  Burial in Waynetown Masonic cemetery.
