STARKEY, William Thomas - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

William Thomas Starkey died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Smith, 710 Milligan Street August 6, 1916 and was laid in his last restnig place in the Poplar Grove Cemetery near Marshall, Ind Aug 8, 1916 aged 70 Years 9 Months 24 Days. Mr. Starkey's early life was spent in Montgomery County, which place he enlisted in the war of 1862 to 65, belonging to 9th Indiana Battery. He bore his sickness with great patience which lasted near four months. He is one who always had a good word and a smile for all those he chanced to meet, and his life was lived with great interest for his children. He was second of a family of 9 children. Frederick Starkey died at age 16 years and Joseph J. Starkey, oldest brother, died in Oklahoma April 23, 1916. Three brothers and three sisters survive, all living in Illinois. He was married to Sophronia Phipps August 6, 1867. His wife departed this life April 19, 1899. To this union were born 8 children, six sons and two daughters. The oldest son, Stephen L. Starkey died at age 4; William Starkey, Jr died at age 25. Mrs. Eliza E. Wagner, oldes daughter died at the age of 45 years. Mrs. Minnie Smith of Crawfordsville, Joseph Starkey of Cates, George Starkey of Attica and Frederick Starkey of Kingman, seventeen grandchildren and four great grandchildren and numerous friends and relative remain to mourn. May he rest in peace and his good influence become immortal, for blessed are the dead which die in the Lord.
