Covington - Maurice Harris Starkey, 82, 2619 N Walnut St, Portland Arch died Nov 13, 1994 at the VA Medical Center, Danville, Ill. He was born in Danville, Ill May 11, 1912 the son of John Clarence and Mary Harris Starkey. He married Mary Hance Jan 9, 1933 in Bloomingdale. She survives. He served during WWII in the US Navy. He formerly taught a lapidary course at DACC. He and his wife owned and operated an antique shop. He retired in 1972. In the 1930s he worked with Thomas Hart Benton, a famous mural painter, and learned Fresco painting. His hobbies include, painting pictures, making jewelry, collecting Indian artifacts, woodworking and lapidary work. He was a 50-year member of Fountain Lodge 360 of Covington, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Past Patriot of OES #123 of Attica, the Wallace Low 12, the DAV of Covington, past president of Double I Gem & Mineral Society of Danville, Ill and a member of the Indiana Archeological Society. Surviving besides the wife, are: a son, Morris C. (Kathy) Starkey, Covington; two daughters, Nancy (Gordon) Fleenor, Covington; Suzanne (Edwin) Erickson, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; 11 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. Private family services were held at the Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Bud Stidham officiating. Burial was in National Cemetery, Danville, Ill. No visitation. Memorials to donor's choice.
