Emeline Barker Starkey, 67, d. Monday at 10:30 o'clock at her home at Cates, with heart trouble. She was the daughter of Bryant & Anna Sowers Barker, and was a resident of that place her entire life. She was first married to Joseph Cates. To this union was born 3 children: Gertie Abernathy and Jessie Cates and one child who preceded her death. She was again married to Joe Starkey. To this union was born six children: Harry of Rob Roy; Eston of Danville, Ill; Viola Howard and Marguerite Smith of Cates; and Lowely Peau of Chicago and Bryant of Kingman. She was a member of the Royal Neighbor order and a member of the UB Church. Her funeral was held Wednesday at Cates at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. John McHargue in charge. Burial was at Harveysburg.

Mrs. Margaret Starkey, wife of Joseph Starkey, Trustee of Fulton township, died at her home in Cates on Monday morning, Sept. 3 1934, at the age of 676 years. She had been in poor health for some time, but her last illness was of short duration. Mrs. Starkey was a daughter of Bryant and Anna Sowers Barker, born April 21 1867 in Parke County. She married Joseph Thomas Cates in December 1884 and he died in 1893. Three children were born, Mrs. Gustie Abernathy and J. D. Cates of Cates and Joan, who died in infancy. She was married to Joseph Starkey September 5 1896 and they became the parents of six children: Harry Starkey, Stone Bluff' William E. Starkey, Danville, Ill.; Bryant Starkey, Kingman; Mrs. Lola Pugh, Chicago; Mrs. Viola Howard and Mrs. Marguerite Smith. The husband also survives. She was a member of Cates U.B. Church and the Royal Neighbors of America. The funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 5 at the Cates U. B. church, Rev. John McHargue officiating. Burial was made in the Harveysburg cemetery. A large gathering of friends attended the services.
