STARKEY, J. Bryant - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

J. Bryant Starkey, a retired Fountain County educator, businessman and farmer died Friday Feb 20 (1981) at his home in RR 1 Covington after an illness of six months. Services for the 72 year old Starkey were conducted Monday at Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home, Rev Dennis Keefer and Rev. Tom Stapp officiated. Burial was at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Before retiring from teaching in 1970, Starkey had taught at Kingman, Attica and Cates and was at one time, principal of Cates School. Form 1941 to 1949 he operated a grocery at Attica and then operated a Western Auto Store, Shelbyville for three years. He was co-found and former own of Morris Bryant Restaurant and Motel in West. Lafayette. He also farmed. Starkey was a veteran of WWII serving in the army. He was a member of Cates Community Church, Wabash Masonic Lodge 708 of Attica, Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis and Indiana Retired Teacher Assoc. He served as a member of the Fountain Co Alcoholic Beverage Commission and was pres. of Covington Elementary School Building Corporation. Starkey was born January 7, 1909 in Fulton Twp, the s/o Joseph and Emaline Barker Starkey. He married Velma Kinneer Nov 1, 1932 at Rockville. He was a grad of Wallace HS and Central Normal College, Danville, Indiana. Survivors besides the widow include a daughter, Mrs. Carol Kochel; 3 sisters, Viola Howard; Mrs. Lola Pugh and Mrs. Harvey (Margarite Norman; 3 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and William. The family asked that any memorial be in the form of contributions to the heart fund.
