Memorial services for Joseph Stahl, age 87, of Newtown, who was killed in an auto accident May 16, were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Presbyterian Church in Newtown. The accident, in which Mr. Stahl lost his life, occurred on U. S. 41, south of Terre Haute, while he was en route to Newtown from Florida where he had been spending the winter. The body was taken to Indianapolis for cremation. The Rev. A. R. Seeman, assisted by the Rev. Peter Heemstra, officiated at the memorial service. Graveside rites were conducted at the Newtown Cemetery by the Covington American Legion Post and the Quigle-Palin American Legion Post of Newtown.   --typed by Walt W

NEWTOWN—Joseph H. Stahl, 87, former educator and Indiana legislator, was killed in a two-car collision on rainswept U.S. 41, 14 miles south of Terre Haute at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Stahl, who wintered in Lanark Village, Fla., was en route to his farm at the edge of Newtown when the collision occurred. State police said a car driven by Thomas Booker, 36, Sullivan, swerved out of control on the wet highway and struck Stahl's car head-on. Booker suffered minor injuries. Mr. Stahl was born near Spencer and graduated from Indiana State Normal College at Terre Haute in 1906. That same year he was married to Luella Rifle of Newtown. She died in 1960. He taught school and was principal of Newtown school and later was a public accountant at Indianapolis. He received a law degree, then served in the legislature several years ago. Mr. Stahl also was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the Newtown Presbyterian Church; Quigle-Palin American Legion Post; Masonic Lodge and Knights of Pythias. He was also a member of the Newtown Presbyterian Church, the Richland Lodge of F&AM at Newtown and the Newtown Knights of Pythias. A daughter, Mrs. Gayle Johnson of Tampa, Fla. survives.
