COVINGTON — Roscoe W. Sprague, 74, former mayor of Covington and a retail merchant in the community for 41 years, died Monday morning at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill. He had been a patient there four days and in failing health the past 18 months. He had been seriously ill one month. Mr. Sprague had been mayor of Covington from 1948 through 1951. He had been a resident of the community since 1930 and a merchant for the past 10 to 12 years he had operated the Sprague Department Store. He was a former resident of Elkhart and Rensselaer. Mr. Sprague was a member of the Covington United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the IOOF, Rensselaer Camp 201. He was a 25-year member of Fountain Lodge 60, F and AM; the York Rite at Crawfordsville, and the Gao Grotto at Danville, Ill. He was also a member of the Indiana Farm Bureau. Born Dec. 8, 1897, at Columbus, Ind., he was a son of John W. and Elizabeth Cain Sprague. He was married Sept. 28, 1918, to Dicie Freeman. The widow survives. Also surviving are two sons, Zane Sprague of San Diego, brother, Talmud Sprague of Covington; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and a brother, Talmud Sprague of Edinburg, Ind. He was preceded in death by a brother. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington. Rev. Robert H. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Covington's Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted at the funeral home at 8 tonight. --typed by Walt W
