NEWTOWN, Ind. (CNS) — Thomas Erwin Spear, 58, of Brookston, Ind., a former resident of Newtown, was dead on arrival Tuesday (May 21, 1968) in the Home Hospital at Lafayette. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Born Sept. 19, 1909, in Bowling Green, Ky., he was a son of Rumzie and Rachael Dooley Spear. He had lived in Brookston since 1935 and operated the Spear Soil Service. He was married in 1930 to Lenore Kirts who preceded in death in 1939. He was married in 1940 to Margaret Sheehan who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Thomas Jr. of Elwood, Harold Lee of Phoenix, Ariz., Walter Joe of Brookston and John L. of Lafayette; a daughter, Wendy Sue at home; a brother, Walter of Crawfordsville, and a sister, Mrs. Nelle Nelson of Hammond. - typed by Walt

Newtown – Thomas E. Spear, age 58 of Brookston formerly of this community was dead on arrival at Home Hospital in Lafayette at 10 p.m. Tuesday May 21 after suffering a heart attack.  A native of Bowling Green, Ky he was born Sept 1909 the son of Rumzle and Rachel Dooley Spear.  The family came to Newtown when he was a child.  He had lived in Brookston since 1935 and operated the Spear Soil Service.  He was wed to Lenora Kirts in 1930 and she preceded him in death in 1939.  In 1940 he married Margaret Sheehan who survives. He was a member of the Church of Christ and Masonic Lodge of Brookstone. Surviving in addition to the wife are four sons: Thomas Jr of Elwood; Harold Lee of Phoenix, Az; Walter Joe of Brookston and John L, Lafayette; one daughter, Mrs. Nell Nelson of Hammond; his stepmother, Mrs. Agnes Spear of Newtown; one half-sister, Mary Spear also of Newtown; five half brothers, Victor of Attica; James of State Line; Paul; Rumzle and Herman of Newtown and eight grandchildren. A daughter died in 1936. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Thompson-Hartzier Funeral Home in Brookstone. The Rev. Paul Himes officiated and burial was in IOOF cemetery there. – kbz
