SOWERS, Samuel N. - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Samuel N. Sowers, second son of Valentine N. and Mary M. Sowers was born in Fountain County, January 19, 1853. He was baptized in infancy by Rev. E. Rudisill, pastor of the Evangelistic Lutheran Church, near Wallace. He died at the home of his brother, William M. Sowers, near Marshall, at 8:30 on the evening of December 11, after an illness of more than a year. Whena bout the age of 9 he met with an accident which caused the loss of one of his legs, rendering him a cripple for life. He met with many other accidents which caused prolonged and intense suffering, which he bore with patience and courage, the equal of which was unknown to his many friends. He was ambitious and industrious, and all thru his sufferings and misfortunes he was never known to ask for any favor in a charitable way, but was ever thankful for any assistance tendered him. Many times during his last illness he spoke of his appreciation of the kind and generous treatment he received from such a host of people. He spent many years in the West,a way from his near relatives, and was a true lover of outdoor life and jovial companionship and was always loyal to his friends. Thru his last illnesss he was hopeful of his recovery almost to the last, but when he realized the end was near he told his nurse that he was ready to meet his God. He was preceded in his death by his parents, one brother and three sisters, and leaves 5 brothers to mourn his loss: I.G. of Gila, Ill; William M. of Marshall, TW and JW of Byron and BT of Wallace. He lived a single life, and it is not known that he ever joined any Church. But we do know that he was a firm believer in the Scriptures, the teachings of the Lutheran faith and that God had prepared a way for the redemption of mankind thru His own Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Wallace, Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church Monday over the remains of Samuel Sowers, 62, who died at the home of his brother, Mike near here Saturday night. The funeral service was in charge of Rev. CL Hunt. The deceased was unmarried and lived for a time in Colorado and Kansas. He was a carpenter belonged to the Odd Fellow Lodge. He leaves five brothers, Thomas and Joseph of Byron; Israel of Gila, Ill; Benjamin of Wallace and Michael of near Marshall.
