James M. Sowers, age 75, prominent and highly respected resident of the Kingman community for many years, died at his country home just north of here (Kingman) at 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning, following a parlytic stroke which he suffered ten days ago. Born in Ill near State Line, Mr. Sowers removed to the Kingman community in his early boyhood. A farmer in early life, Mr. Sowers was a mail carrier out of Kingman for many years and then for 18 years before his retirement from active business 10 or 12 years ago, he was cashier of the Citizen State Bank in Kingman. Mr. Sowers was active in the work of the United Brethren church in Kingman for many years. He also held membership in the Modern Woodmen. Mr. Sowers is survived by his widow, Julietta Ratcliff Sowers, to whom he was married February 5, 1893. Their golden wedding anniversary was celebrated last year, 3 children, a daughter, Virginia Sowers, of 2340 W 113th Place, Chicago; two sons, Cliston Sowers of Huntington Park CA and Gordon A Sowers who is the agriculture agent for Montgomery County in Crawfordsville. Other survivors include the stepmother, Mrs. Minnie Hamm of Pittsboro three brothers Jackie Sowers of Yeddo, Will Sowers of Kingman and Scott Ratcliff of Kingman , sisters, Mrs. Delia Wood of Newtown; Mrs. Chester Allen of Pittsboro and Mrs. Jessie Culver of Morgantown. There are also five grandchildren, two of them are in the service, Seaman Cliston Phillips Sowers in the US Navy and Major Gordon T Sowers with the USAF now stationed in this country after many months of active duty in the So. Pacific. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Kingman United Bretheran church with the Rev Winfield Sheriill former pastor officiating. Burial will be at Fraternal cemetery.

James Sowers, well known farmer of the Kingman community died early last Thursday morning, Feb 19 on the day following his 75th birthday anniversary. Mr. Sowers had been ill since he suffered a stroke last month.
He was born in Parke County February 9, 1869, the son of Madison and Louisa Ratcliff Sowers and was married to Julietta Ratcliff on February 5, 1893.
He was a member of the United Brethren Church was a highly regarded man. He is survived by two sons, Gordon of Crawfordsville and Clifton of Los Angeles, Calif; one daughter, Miss Virginia Sowers of Chicago; and three brothers, John of Yeddo, William of Kingman and Scott of Crawfordsville. Surviving are also five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the United Brethren Church Sunday afternoon with burial in Fraternal Cemetery.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the U. B. Church for James M. Sowers, with the Rev. Winfield Sherrill of Tangier officiating. “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder,” the song Mr. Sowers was singing when he left home the last time, was sung by the congregation. Other music was furnished by Mrs. Clarence Sowers and Mrs. Miles, Lindley with Mrs. Scott Ratcliff, pianist. The pall bearers were Joe Bland, Loren Jones, Otis Teague, Clem Ratcliff, Ward Mann and Robert Newnum. Flower bearers were Mrs. Joe Bland, Mrs. Loren Jones, Mrs. Clem Ratcliff, Mrs. George Shell, Mrs. George Cory, Mrs. M. F. Sherrill, Mrs. Henry Puckett, Mrs. Fay Cook, Mrs. Lizzie Jones and Mrs. Leora Marshall. Burial was in Fraternal Cemetery with G. W. Spencer in charge. – S
