COVINGTON – Alva A. Southgate, age 74, of 1321 Liberty St., Covington, a resident here for the past 30 years, died at 11:05 p.m. Monday June 17, at the Carle Clinic in Urbana, Ill. He had been in ill health for several years and was seriously ill the past month. Mr. Southgate was born in Knox County, Ind., Sept. 11, 1893, the son of Charles H. and Alice Sarah Seifert Southgate. He was a carpenter and contractor by trade. He was married to Helen Cornett in 1934 and she survives. Mr. Southgate was a member of Fountain Lodge No. 60, F & AM and the Baptist Church at Washington, Ind. Surviving, in addition to the wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Austin Johnson of Washington, Ind., and Mrs. Gloria Martin of Warren County; two sons, James L. of Forest Park, Ill., and Jack R. Bray of Danville, Ill.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Bertha Bolmgren of Covington, and one niece. He was preceded in death by two brothers. The body is at the Hegg Funeral Home in Covington where friends may call afternoon today, June 19. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Glenn Ray, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Covington, will officiate and burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. – jlr
