SONGER, Manford - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Once again we are called to give a brief sketch of the life of a man who is a descendant of one of the early pioneer families. Adam Songer came to Van Buren Township in 1826 entering a piece of land near Coal Creek south of where Veedersburg now stands.  His son, James Songer grew to manhood on this farm of his father, rearing a family of 8 children, 7 boys, 1 girl.  Manford Songer, the subject of this sketch was the 6th son of this union. Five of his brothers, James Jr; Waltz; Hardy; Julian and Court preceded him in death. He is survived by one brother, Ode Songer and one sister, Mrs. Florence Bookins both of Veedersburg. Manford was born October 18, 1872 on the land entered by his grandfather. There he grew to manhood with his brothers and sister attending school at Dice's Corner in the winter and helping farm in summer. On March 3, 1895 he was married to Lucinda Anglin, a neighbor girl. To this union two sons were born: Hardy Ray of West Point Ind and Robert A. of near Waynetown. The young couple spent many years farming then moved to Veedersburg where he served as city police for 3 years. They then returned to the farm. He was appointed Superintendent of the  County Farm where he spent 8 years after which he again returned to the farm.  In failing health they moved to Veedersburg 3 years ago at which place he quietly passed away October 30, 1947 at age 75 years 12 days.  On last March 3 he and his good wife celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. He leaves his wife, two sons, Hardy & Robert, two grandchildren, Robert C. Songer of near Waynetown and Hardy R. Songer of Linden; 3 great grandchildren, Lee Carlisle Songer, Michael Allen Songer and Roderick Lynn Songer and host of friends to mourn. Mann, as he was familiarly known was a good neighbor, progressive citizens, loving husband and devoted father.
