Alfred LeRoy Songer, 82, of Veedersburg, died at 6:22 p.m. Saturday, September 9, 2000 at his residence. Born on September 6, 1918 in Veedersburg, he was the son of the late Glenwood and Elsie May (Clawson) Songer. A 1936 graduate of Veedersburg High School, he was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. LeRoy was a member of Veedersburg United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Veedersburg Lodge #491 F & AM, Scottish Rite in Indianapolis, Murat Shrine, Charles Forrest Post #288 American Legion and Operating Engineers Local #841. He worked in heavy construction for many years, including Reith Riley and Fauber contractors. LeRoy was a Veedersburg Little League Coach for several years. He was married to Mary Jena Briscoe on February 7, 1942. She preceded him in death on December 19, 1964. He later married Laura Ruth Hinder on June 10, 1966 at Havre De Grace, Md. She survives. Also surviving, are: a daughter, Nancy Songer of Veedersburg; a son, Michael Songer, of Veedersburg; two stepsons, Joe Martin of Aberdeen, Md. and Fred Martin of Hardyville, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Doris Jean Wise of Havre De Grace; two brothers, James O. (Ann) Songer of Veedersburg and Harold G. (Eloise) Songer of Danville, Ill.; two sisters, Julia Dean (Lowell) Crane and Wanda (Robert) Kester, both of Veedersburg; two grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was also preceded in death by an infant stepson. Visitation was Monday at Parham-Shelby Funeral Home, Veedersburg. Service on Tuesday at Veedersburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Rob Rixman officiating. Interment in Bonebrake Cemetery, Veedersburg, with military graveside rites. The family requests memorials be made to: Shriners Hospitals, 2001 S.
