Oxford—Gene
Snodgrass, 67, 205 N. Howard St., Oxford, died at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April
20, 1989 at his home. He had been in ill health for six months but death was
unexpected.
He was born Feb.
2, 1922 in Muncie. He moved to Benton County in 1936 and lived at Templeton. He
was married May 6, 1943 in Oxford to Julia Nichols, who survives.
He was a 1940
graduate of Oxford High School. He was a plumbing and heating contractor and
was serving as the Oxford Park superintendent.
He followed
Purdue and high school basketball and youth athletic programs in Benton County.
He played for the Oxford blue devils basketball team in 1940 and also played
for the Dan Patch Pacers semi-pro basketball team.
He was a member
of Oxford United Methodist Church, Fowler American Legion, Oxford Lions Club,
Pine Village Masonic Lodge, a member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 8596 and a former member of the Oxford Town Board.
He served in the
Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was a sergeant with the 48th
Railroad Combat Engineers.
Surviving besides
his wife are three sons, Michael, Indianapolis; Melvin, Oxford, and Randy,
Scottsburg; one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Lori) McKinney, Mulberry, and eight
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
Funeral services
were at 11 a.m. Monday in Oxford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary
Alice Bradish officiating. Burial was in Oxford West Cemetery.
