(with picture) Kingman Ind - Funeral services for Joseph James Starkey, 84, popular auction clerk who died Tuesday evening at his home, will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Woodrow Funeral Home. The Rev. Eugene Rapson will officiate assisted by the Rev. Lawrence West. Burial in Harveysburg Cemetery. Mr. Starkey had been a farmer and had served as trustee from Fulton Twp. He also had operated a general store at Cates for several years. He was a member of the Cates EUB Church. he was a 50-year member of Yeddo Masonic Lodge 636 and belonged to Yeddo OES, Kingman Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows & Modern Woodmen lodges. The body is at the funeral home.

Kingman - Joseph James Starkey, 84, widely known as a clerk at auction sales died Tuesday evening at his home after several years of failing health. He was born near Marshall in Clark County, Illinois Oct 18, 1876, a son of William Thomas and Sophronia Phipps Starkey and was married in April 1897 to Emiline Barker Cates who died in 1934. He was married Sept 21, 1935 to Ella L. Jones who survives. Mr. Starkey had farmed, served 3 terms as trustee of Fulton Township in Fountain County and for several years operated a general store at Cates. He was a member of the Cates EUB Church more than 50 years and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 636 of Yeddo. He belonged also to the Yeddo OES Chapter 313 Kingman K of P IOOF and Modern Woodmen lodges. Surviving besides the widow are three daughters, Mrs. Viola Howard of Covington, Mrs. Lola Pugh of Auburn and Mrs. Marguerite Smith of Attica; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Gertie Abernathy of Covington; two sons, William E. Starkey of Covington and J. Bryant Starkey of Rt 1, Covington; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 4 stepgrandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren. Preceding him in death was a son, Harry R. Starkey and stepson, Jesse D. Cates. Services are at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Woodrow Funeral Home with Rev. Eugene Rapson officiating assisted by Rev. Lawrence West. Burial will be in the Fraternal Cemetery. Friends may call after noon Thursday at the funeral home.
