Lafayette—The Rev. Francis J. Niesen, 81, a retired Roman Catholic priest in the Lafayette diocese, died at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 1989 in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center. He had been residing in St. Anthony’s Healthcare Center.
  He was born Jan. 23, 1908 in Chicago. He attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago, Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis and St. Mary’s Seminary of the West in Norwood, Ohio. He was ordained into the priesthood June 10, 1933 in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne.
  He was an associate priest in St. Mary’s Church in Anderson from 1933 until 1939 and at the Fort Wayne Cathedral from 1939 until 1943.
  He served parishes at St. Francis Xavier in Attica from 1943 until 1946; St. Joan of Arc in Kokomo from 1946 until 1970; St. Vincent de Paul in Logansport from 1970 until 1972; and from 1972 until his retirement in 1980 at St. Margaret’s Church in Montpelier.
  He was a former state chaplain of the Knights of Columbus, and was a former director of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission and formerly served on the Priests Senate, Migrant workers Apostolate and the Pastoral Council.
  He was also a delegate to the National Council of Catholic Men and was a former moderator of the Family Life Bureau of the U. S. Catholic Conference.
  Surviving are two sisters, Adelaide O’Connor, Skokie, Ill., and Marie Vogt, Oak Brook, Ill.
  Concelebrated Funeral Mass was at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Joan of Arc Church, Kokomo, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kokomo.
   Fenn Funeral Home, Kokomo, was in charge of arrangements.
