Richard Kendall Newton, 61, chef at the Harrison Hills Country Club, died 2:15 a.m. today in the Veterans Hospital, Danville, Ill., where he had been a patient since Dec. 14. He had been in ill health since May.
  A native of Terre Haute, he was born June 12, 1913, the son of Fred and Izy Mugg Newton. He had lived in Attica the last three years and formerly resided in Lafayette and Terre Haute.
  He was married Feb. 18, 1971, in Plainfield, Ill., to Mary Madison, caterer at the country club, who survives.
  Also surviving are a stepson, Michael Madison of Huntsville, ala.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Joyce Locke of Decatur, Ala., Mrs. Caron Waterman of Portland, and Gail of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Myers, Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Buryl Porter of Tucson, Ariz.; seven step grandchildren. One brother preceded him in death.
  He formerly owned and operated the Homemade Pie Co. in Terre Haute several years. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the navy. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Terre Haute and the Attica Lions Club.
  Services were held at Maus Funeral Home in Attica with Rev. J. P. Skinner and Rev. Jesse Bueol officiating. Burial was at Wood Lawn Cemetery east of Terre Haute.
