George C. Newkirk, son of David and Christena Myers Newkirk, was born on a farm near Wallace, Fountain County, Indiana July 1st, 1879. Here he grew to manhood and August 12, 1900, he was united in marriage to Loretta Hybarger. He was baptized in infancy and later confirmed in the Evangelic Lutheran Church and continued a member of that church to the end of life’s journey. When a young man, he was initiated as an Entered Apprentice, passed to the degree of a Fellow Craft and later raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason. He advanced in Masonry and many years ago became a member of Crawfordsville Royal Arch chapter. He had served as the Worshipful Master of Wallace Lodge and at the time of his passing away was the Worthy Patron of Wallace Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Except for a short time that he had resided in Foster and Waynetown his life had been lived within a few miles of where he was born. For a number of years he had not enjoyed good health and was in a weakened condition. One week ago he was taken hurriedly to Culver Hospital where it was found that he was ill with pneumonia and while every effort was put forth by the doctors and nurses to restore him to health yet it was not to be for at near 9 o’clock of Tuesday May 31 he passed peacefully away at age 52 years 10 months 29 days, leaving to mourn a devoted wife, one daughter, Miss Wandale, who resides at home, one son Millard and wife of near Wallace, an aged mother, a widowed daughter-in-law and 3 grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends. His relation to his immediate family have been such that his passing is a distinct loss to them and comes to them as av ery sad experience. To the community in which he has lived a very active life, he will be much missed and his passing will be much regretted by all those with whom he has been associated these many years. He has gone into his eternal home and may peace be unto his departed soul.
