LeRoy Nelson, 41, widely known and highly respected Veedersburg civic leader, was found dead about 7 p.m. Monday in a field two miles north of town. His auto was parked nearby. He had last been seen as he left his home about 12 hours earlier.
Associated with the Veedersburg Lumber Company for the past eight years as manager, he was an active worker in church, civic and fraternal organizations. He was president of the Veedersburg Lions Club, chaplain of the American Legion, and an active member of the Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge. Roy was also a booster of the Scout movements and was happy and willing to serve any worthwhile cause unselfishly.
He moved to this community from Danville, Illinois, eight years ago. He was the son of Oscar and Hannah Anderson Nelson.
Fountain County Corner Ralph Nelson conducted an inquiry and attributed death to a self-inflicted wound from a shotgun which was found nearby.
Survivors include his wife, Carmen; two children, Michael, 12, and Beth, 9; his mother, of Danville, Ill.; two brothers, Melvin and Harold, both of Danville, Ill.; and a sister, Mrs. Barbara Kuris, also of Danville, Ill.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Veedersburg Methodist Church with the Rev. William Tresslar officiating. Military rites were conducted by the Veedersburg American Legion Post. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Danville, Illinois, with the Parham Funeral Home in charge. - jz
