VEEDERSBURG — Dallas Woodrow McMurtrie, 88, 1779 Union Church Road, died in his residence, on the Homestead Farm, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002. Dallas was born May 14, 1914, on the homestead, west of Newtown, in Fountain County. He was raised in rural Veedersburg and graduated from Newtown High School in 1931. During WWII Dallas worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit from 1940-1946. He moved back to the Homestead Farm and took some classes at Purdue University in Dairy Farming. He later moved to Rock Hill, S.C. where he owned and operated Snow White Dairy Company. He later moved back to the farm and farmed and also worked for Uniroyal Company in Indianapolis for 12 years. With the exception of living in Detroit and Rock Hill, McMurtrie lived all of his life on the Homestead Farm, where he was born, which dated back to the 1820's. Dallas supported the Fraternal Order of Police; he built bird cages; enjoyed traveling. He received patents on a portable heater and farm related implements. He loved and cared for his cats. Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Hamlin, Kokomo; Clea Mae (husband: Burlin) Butts, Kokomo; Nieces and Nephews, Tom McMurtrie, Tim McMurtrie, Dean McMurtrie, Sheila Steele, John McMurtrie, Richie Hamlin, Zenna Lee Turza, Roger Butts, John Butts, Phillip Butts and James Butts, several great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Harold McMurtrie; a sister, Bernice Murphy, a nephew Tom Butts and his parents Orrie and Zenna Moffitt McMurtrie. Friends called at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, on Nov. 12 from 12:30 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Union Christian Cemetery, west of Newtown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fountain County Humane Society. – jlr

He also had attended Purdue University and studied dairy farming. He lived most of his lif eon the homestead, which had been in his family since the 1820s. During WWII, he went to Detroit and worked for Ford Motor Co from 1940-1946.  He later owned and operated Snow White Dairy Co. in Rock Hill, SC and worked for Uniroyal in Indianapolis for 12 years. Mr. McMurtrie was a supporter of the Fraternal Order of Police. He built bird cages, received patents on a portable heater and farm-related implements and he enjoyed traveling. Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Hamlin and Clea Mae Butts (husband: Burlin), both of Kokomo.
