Rev. William Q. McKnight, 68, minister of the Sterling Christian Church died of a heart attack while driving his car Wednesday evening. Rev. and Mrs. McKnight were returning home from a church picnic and were driving south on US 41 near Rob Roy when he slumped at the wheel. The car left the road and was finally stopped in a corn field when Mrs. McKnight turned off the ignition. She was uninjured. The McKnights came to the Veedersburg area and the Sterling Church in August 1959 after 30 years of missionary work in Japan. Both are natives of the county. Besides the wife, two children, a brother, Thad McKnight, Newtown survive. Funeral arrangements were incomplete as we went to press Thursday noon.
VEEDERSBURG — Rev. William Q. McKnight, pastor of the Sterling Christian Church, suffered a fatal heart attack about 7 p. m. Wednesday as he and his wife were returning from a trip to Attica. He was driving their car. Rev. and Mrs. McKnight had been visiting relatives at Attica and were returning home when the attack occurred about two miles south of there. Mrs. McKnight turned off the car engine when her husband suddenly became ill but the auto crashed through a fence before coming to a stop in a corn field. She was uninjured in the crash. Rev. McKnight was born July 24, 1892, near Newtown, the son of Charles L. and Joann Reed McKnight. He was married June 8, 1918, to Mary Kellogg in the Methodist Church at Newtown. His wife survives him as do a son, Robert McKnight of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Esther Coleman of Norfolk, Va.: 11 grandchildren, and a brother, T. G. McKnight of Newtown. Rev. McKnight had served the Sterling Church for the past year. He had been a missionary to Japan since 1920, making numerous trips from there to the U.S. He was professor of sociology at Mankato State College, Mankato, Minn., in 1958-59. The 68-year-old pastor was preceded in death by a daughter, three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be at the Crumley Funeral Home at Hillsboro at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3. Burial will be at the Newtown Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday afternoon and evening at the funeral home. --typed by Walt W
