Attica, Ind., Aug 24 - Three men were wounded, one fatally, in the climax of a feud between the Wilhite and McFerren families in the village of Independence, six miles up the Wabash river from this city early to-day. Joseph McFerren, a druggist, was shot by Lewis Wilhite in the McFerren store and will die. McFerren's son then shot Wilhite four times with a small revolver without seriously wounding him. Wilhite left the store, and later, in displaying before a crowd how he had shot McFerren, he discharged a bullet through William Reynolds's neck. The crowd, enraged at this, chased Wilhite to the river and he escaped lynching by leaping into a boat and rowing away. He was caught in this city and taken to jail at Williamsport.
