Hillsboro - Mrs. Orpha McElwee, 79, died at her home southeast of Hillsboro at 2 a.m. Wednesday, following a serious illness of several weeks' duration. Mrs. McElwee was born May 10, 1873, at Yeddo, the daughter of Leonard C. and Anna M. Simmons McElwee. She was married Dec 27, 1893 to David M. McElwee. Her husband preceded her in death on March 2, 1941. Mr. and Mrs. McElwee went to housekeeping at St. Joseph, Ill where they resided for 13 years before moving to Hillsboro. They resided on their farm near Hillsboro until Mr. McElwee's death. Since then Mrs. McElwee has continued to reside on the home farm. Mrs. McElwee was a member of the Prairie Chapel Christian Church and for many years very active in the Ladies Aid Society. Mrs. McElwee was the last survivor of a family of six children. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Phoebe Humphreys and her son-in-law, Charles Humphreys who have resided with her. An infant son preceded her in death. Funeral services will be conducted at the family residence at 2 p.m. Friday with burial in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. The body will remain at the residence where friends may call. -- kbz
