J. Frank McDermond, Jr. , prominent Attica newspaperman, and editor and publisher of the Attica Ledger Tribune and the Fountain-Warren Democrat, died Tuesday night at the Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis, where he had been a patient for the past 3 months.
Jay, as he was known to his friends, died at the age of 54, after a colorful career. He was active in Republican politics, past president of the Indiana Republican Editorial Association, past president and
director of the Hoosier State Press Association and was, at the time of his death, treasurer of the National Editorial Association. He also was active in the Methodist Church, the Murat Shrine and Scottish Rite, at
Indianapolis and Wabash Lodge 708 F&AM.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank McDermond, Sr. of Attica; his wife and two children, jack and Mary Jane; two sisters, Mrs. CJ VanLandeghem of Cleveland and Mrs. George H. Lister of Buffalo; two
brothers, Chas. T. McDermond of Attica and Ralph E. McDermond of Long Island.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Church with burial in the RIverside cemetery. --- transcribed by kbz

J. Frank McDermond, Jr., editor and publisher of the Attica Ledger-Tribune died yesterday in Long Hospital after a year’s illness. He was 54. A lifelong resident of Attica, Mr. McDermond also was editor and publisher of the Fountain and Warren Democrat, a weekly publication. He was treasurer of the National Editorial Association, a trustee of the Indiana State Farm at Putnamville and a past president of the Hoosier State Press Association. Mr. McDermond entered the newspaper business at 14, when he published a small paper, the Clipper with a small press in his home. The Ledger-Tribune was the only daily publication in Benton, Warren and Fountain counties. Active in Republican politics, Mr. McDermond was appointed permanent secretary of the Republican State Convention in 1932. He was a past president of the Indiana Republican Editorial Association and a member of the Attica Blue Lodge of Masons, Murat Shrine, Scottish Rite, Rotary Club and Elks Lodge. Mr. McDermond attended Culver Military Academy. He was postmaster at Attica during the Hoover Administration. Active in civic and church work, he was a member of the Attica Chamber of Commerce and the First Methodist Church of Attica. He also was a member of the Attica Country club and Indianapolis Press Club. Mr. McDermond had been a patient at Long Hospital for three months. He was attended by his wife and his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. FA Holmes, 25 N Ritter Ave at the time of his death. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ines McDermond; a daughter, Miss Mary Jane McDermond; a son, Jack McDermond; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank McDermond, Sr, Attica; two sisters, Mrs. CJ VanLandeghem, Cleveland, O; and Mrs. George H. Lister, Buffalo, NY; and two brothers, Charles T. McDermond, Danville, Ill and Ralph E. McDermond, Long Island, NY.

Frank McDermond, Jr. owner and publisher of the Attica Ledger-Tribune and Fountain-Warren Democrat died Tuesday evening at 8 o’clock at Robert Long Hospital in Indianapolis where he had been ill for several months. His wife and Bernice Hartz and his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. PA Holmes of Indianapolis were at his bedside when he passed away. Becoming ill early in the spring his condition has grown steadily worse throughout all the summer and fall until the end. Surviving besides the widow are a son, Jack McDermond; a daughter, Mary Jane McDermond; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank McDermond, Sr all of Attica; two sisters, Mrs. CJ VanLandeghem of Cleveland, Ohio and Mrs. George H. Lister of Buffalo, NY and two brothers, Charles T. McDermond of Danville, Ill and Ralph E. McDermond of Long Island, NY. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon from the First Methodist Church in Attica, Rev. OL Collier officiating. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery. J. Frank McDermond, Jr was born Aug 13, 1892 at 411 E. Monroe Street, Attica, Indiana in the house now occupied by Mrs. WF Mullinix. He was the son of J. Frank and Emma Trebing McDermond, Sr and oldest of five children. He attended the Kindergarten and Attica Public Schools. He was united in marriage to Miss Inez Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Davis who live near Judyville on Jan 18, 1916. They were married at her home in Warren County,. Rev. James G. Campbell officiating.
