James McCrea was born in Butler County, Ohio on the 14th day of April 1829 and died May 9, 1903, aged 74 years and 25 days. When about fourteen years of age he moved with his parents to Montgomery County, Indiana. He was married to Sarah Garvey on the 23rd day of December, 1852. To that union was born one child, Lena, who died April 7, 1865. The mother having died Oct 3, 1854. On the 30th of March, 1856, he was united in marriage to Margaret T. Canine. To that union was born three children, Mrs. Lillian Ann Smart, Hiram McCrea and Mrs. Laura Bell Hillyer, all of whom together with the wife and six grandchildren survive him. He united with the old school Baptist Church called Union in Montgomery County Indiana on 27 June 1858. About the year 1865 he united with the Pine Creek, old school Baptist by letter and after the dissolution of Pine Creek Church about the year 1893, he united with the Big Shawnee Church of old school Baptist of Fountain county, Ind and afterwards served that church as its clerk until he was stricken down with paralysis Feb 25, 1900, after which he never walked a step or even turned himself in the bed but never was heard to murmur or complain as to his condition but often expressed how swiftly time does pass, thus showing the presence of the Lord with him. It can be said of Brother McCrea that he was a loving husband, a kind father and a faithful member of the church of his choice. By his request the funeral service was conducted by Elder MM Canine at Big Shawnee Church near Newtown, Ind on the 11th of May which was largely attended by sympathizing friends. Truly another good man has fallen but not lost, but gone on before - kbz
