McCORKLE, Charles Leland

Charles Leland McCorkle, 90, of Route 1, West Point, died at 9:25 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in Home Hospital.  He had been hospitalized one week.  He was born in Jackson Township, Tippecanoe County, Sept. 7, 1894 and was a lifelong resident of the township.  He was a 1915 graduate of Wingate High School.  He attended the University of Nebraska, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.  He was married Nov. 19, 1938, in Hammond, to Verna Himmelright, who died Feb. 11, 1980.   He had farmed in the West Point area most of his life.  He wa an avid basketball fan of Indiana University basketball.   He was a member of Church of God, Abrahamic Faith, in Hedrick.

    Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Darryl (Shirley) Lutes and one brother, J. Russell McCorkle, both of Route 1, West Point, and two grandchildren, Steve and Kimberly.   Funeral services were held at the Church of God, Hedrick at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, with the Rev. Edward H. Goit and the Rev. Wally Winner officiating.  Burial was in Meharry Cemetery near Wingate.  Mercer Masonic Lodge service was at 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.   The selection of “In the Garden” was played by Donna Wheeldon.   Those who served as pallbearers were Charles McCorkle, John McCorkle, Andrew McCorkle, Jim Hamilton, Frank Taylor, Bill DeFreese.  Maus Funeral Home, Attica, was in charge of arrangements. – thanks so much to “S” for all her work
