Covington, Ind. (CNS) - Services were held yesterday at the Westminister Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Ill. for Elmer O. McCann, 61, a veteran newsman of Decatur, a former area resident. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery. Born Sept. 5, 1905, at West Union, Ohio, he was the son of Edward B. and Helen Marshall McCann. He moved with his family to Vermillion County in 1915 and attended schools in Gessie and Perrysville. He was graduated from Covington High in 1923 where he was a star basketball player. He was married in Danville, Ill., in March 1922 to Susie Shouse, who died. He began his career at 19 when he was employed the Danville Commercial News. He moved to Decatur where he was associated with the Herald-Review for 40 years. He retired due to ill health last year. At that time, he was head of the advertising department and had won national recognition for a unique advertising plan. Survivors include three sons, Robert of Atherton, Calif., Richard of Casper, Wyo., and Russell of Decatur; three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Keller of Covington, Mrs. Dorothy Allen of Mellott and Mrs. Wanda Mattern of Attica; and nine grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. - jlr

Word has been received in the Covington community of the recent death of Elmer C. (O.) McCann of Decatur, Ill., formerly of this area. He was a veteran newsman.
Mr. McCann was born at West Union (Adams County), Ohio, Sept. 5, 1905, the son of Edward B. and Helen Marshall McCann. He moved with his parents to Vermillion County, Ind., in 1913 and attended school at Gessie and Perrysville, graduating at Covington in 1923. He was a star basketball player on the Covington team.
He was married in Danville, Ill., to Miss Susie Shouse in March 1925. He began his career in the newspaper field at the age of 19, when he was employed by the Danville Commercial News. From there he went to Decatur, where he was associated with the Herald-Review for 40 years, until he retired because of ill health last year. At that time he was head of the advertising department and had won national recognition for a unique advertising plan.
Mr. McCann is survived by: three sons, Robert of Atherton, Calif., Richard of Casper, Wyo., and Russell of Decatur; three sisters, Mrs. Agnes (R. Carl) Keller of Covington, Mrs. Dorothy Allen of Mellott and Mrs. Wanda Mattern of Attica; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters and two brothers.
Memorial services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Decatur, with burial in Graceland Cemetery.
