Hillsboro - Mrs. Alta B. Leighty, 67, died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday at her home located east of here. She had been in failing health for several months and was a patient in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Danville, Ill for a period of time. Born June 27, 1892, north of Newtown, she was a daughter of Albert and Norma Parent Porter. She married Carl E. Porter March 24, 1910. Mrs. Leighty attended school at Mellott and was a member of the Congregational Christian Church there. She was also a member of Dorcas Temple Pythian Sisters and was past worthy matron of Fern Chapter of Hillsboro OES. Mr. and Mrs. Leighty were in business here for a number of years. They operated a greenhouse and grocery store before moving to a farm east of here. They spent their entire married life in the Mellott and Hillsboro communities. Only survivor is the husband. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Tabith Banks, a brother and her parents. Her daughter died Oct 11, 1953. Funeral rites are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Crumley Funeral Home here with Rev. William Q. McKnight officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Monday.

Mrs. Alta B. Leighty, 67 died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday Aug 23 at her home east of Hillsboro. She had been in failing health for several months and was a patient in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Danville, Ill for a period of time. Born June 27, 1892 north of Newtown she was the daughter of Albert and Nora Parent Porter. She was married March 24, 1910 to Carl E. Leighty who survives. She attended Mellott school and was a member of the Congregational Christian Church of Mellott. She was a member of Fern Chapter Order of Eastern Star where she had served as Worthy Matron having served in 1958, with her husband as Worthy Patron. She had spent most of her married life in Hillsboro and Mellott vicinities. They had been in business in Hillsboro for a number of years but had rented and moved to a farm near here. Only survivor is the husband. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Tabith Banks of Indianapolis who died Oct 11, 1953; by her parents and a brother, Roy Porter. The Rev. William Q. McKnight, pastor of the Sterling Congregational Christian Church, officiated at the funeral service held at the Crumley Funeral Home in Hillsboro at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Organ music was by Mrs. Mary Newman who also accompanied Mrs. Marjorie Linville who sang, God Understands and Face to Face. Serving as pall bearers were Freeman Cronk; Paul Trees; Kenneth Short; Harry Rice; Fred Ruthledge and Chester Foxworthy. Mrs. Twila Zackmire, worthy matron and Elmer Hesler, worthy patron of Fern Chapter Order of Eastern Star conducted the service at the masonic Cemetery in Waynetown. – kbz
