Mrs. Elvira Layton was born May 31, 1834 and died Dec 14, 1905 aged 71 Years 7 Months 13 Days. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Granville Adkins, Sr., one of the prominent pioneer families of the county. Of her immediate family, one brother, Chap B. Adkins resides in Veeedersburg, and two sisters, Mrs. Cicinnati Bills and Mrs. James R. Clark, who resides in Portland Oregon still survive her. She was united in marriage with the late Peter M. Layton November 29, 1855 to which union two daughters, Mrs. S.C. Sprankle and Mrs. Charles H. Docheterman were born. Her early life was spent on the farm, the old homestead a few miles east of this city. It was there she united her efforts in her young life with those of her young husband, to establish for themselves a home, and prove for their declining years of life, and as years succeeded years their efforts were crowned with success. Their home was ever open to their many friends with whom they joyfully shared their bounties. No one ever visited them but that they were anxious to do so again, for their hospitality made a kindly impression upon every heart. But time, the great leveler, after years of patient effort, began to remind them that life's midday had passed and that its evening was approaching, and that the shows were growing longer, that it was time for them to prepare for rest. They then left the farm and came to our city, where they resided until the summons came to come home. Elvira Layton's whole life was a commendable one, an example worthy to follow. She was a member of the Baptist Church of this city. Her health failed several years ago, but during all the time elapsed she was ever a patient sufferer, with never a murmur or complaint, her abiding faith in Christ never wavered and as death came, she looked with pleasure to the meeting with her loved ones gone before. Thus she fell asleep in Jesus. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. JP Henson, were held from the family residence on 5th Street, Sunday afternoon at 2, interment following in Mt. Hope.
