Attica – An Attica resident born in a log cabin in Tippecanoe County and who moved to Newtown in a covered wagon died Sunday morning in Alward Nursing Home at age 103. Mrs. Mary Ellen Boot Largent, of 500 N 3rd St, Attica, had been ill two weeks. She lived most of her life in Attica, moving here at an early age from Newtown. In 1886 she married Samuel Workinger who died in 1918. She later married William Largent and he died in 1956. Five of her seven children preceded her in death. Mrs. Large was a member of the Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, William Workinger of Benton Harbor, Mich and one daughter, Mrs. Freda Gooden of Attica. - kbz
Mrs. Mary Ellen Boot Largent, 103, of 505 N. Third, Attica died Sunday (April 16, 1972) at the Alward Nursing Home. She had been a patient since 1966 and had been in ill health for two weeks. She was born in a log cabin in Tippecanoe County, Sept. 6, 1868. She and her family moved to Newtown in a covered wagon and later came to Attica where she had spent most of her life. She attended school until the fifth grade when she quit to care for her invalid mother. When she was 18, she was married to Samuel Workinger, who was one of the original construction workers in building Harrison Steel Casting Co. in Attica. When he died in 1918, she did odd jobs to support her family and later was married to William Largent, who died in 1956. Survivors include a son, William Workinger of Benton Harbor, Mich.; a daughter, Mrs. Freda Gooden of Attica; 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five children. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Services were Tuesday at the Dale Maus Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harry C. Randolph officiating.
