Services for Nye LaBaw, a Danville native and an associate professor at Northern Illinois University, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb, Ill. Burial will be in Fairview Memory Gardens in DeKalb. There will be no visitation. LaBaw died 8:11 Tuesday (Aug. 28, 1979), at the Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, a few minutes after he was admitted. LaBaw was a former assistant athletic director and golf coach at NIU. He served as the assistant to the present director for men, Robert J. Brigham, from 1968 to 1978. He directed the Huskie golf team for 11 years, 1953-57 and 1961-68. He left NIU from 1958 to 1960 while completing doctoral studies at Michigan State University. He received his doctorate of education in 1960. During that time he assisted in the Spartan golf program at Michigan State. In addition to his coaching and administrative duties, LaBaw also served as coordinator for undergraduate physical education for men, 1964-1967 and as director of intermural sports for 10 years. He received his bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Illinois in 1949 and his master's degree from the U of I a year later. He was a Danville High athlete, winning several letters. He served in the Army in World War II. Born Aug. 16, 1924 in Danville, he was a son of Nye and Oakie Strader LaBaw. On June 1, 1947, he married Barbara Hughes in Danville and she survives. Other survivors include his mother, Mrs. LaBaw, of Danville; three children, Michelle Ann, Curt and James; and a grandson, Matthew. He was preceded in death by his father and three brothers. The family has requested that memorials be in the form of contributions to the Heart Fund.
