Mellott, Ind.—Mrs. Gloria Jean Knowles, 40, of Veedersburg Route 3, was struck and killed by an eastbound Norfolk and Western freight train, as she stood on the railroad tracks at the Indiana 341 crossing at 10:10 p.m., Friday.
Indiana State Police said that the train’s engineer observed Mrs. Knowles standing on the tracks shortly before striking her, but was unable to brake the train to avoid impact.
An investigation will continue in the matter.
Mrs. Knowles was pronounced dead at the scene by Fountain County Deputy Coroner Halsey Williams. Indiana State Troopers Dave Cronk and Bill Burnworth were assisted by Fountain County Deputy LeRoy Cloncs in the investigation.
Mrs. Knowles was born near Mellott, March 20, 1934, to Ralph and Flossie Clark McAlister. She was married to Grant Knowles on Jan. 21, 1951. Her husband survives.
She lived in the Mellott area all her life and attended Richland Township School. She was formerly employed by the Attica A & P grocery and the Ranch Supermarket in Crawfordsville. She belonged to the Mellott United Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Survivors include three daughters, Dianne, Melody Dawn, and Lisa Gay, all living at home; a son, Greg L. at home and a sister Mrs. Willis (Gail) Whitaker of Mellott.
Services were Monday at the Crumley-Williams Funeral Home in Hillsboro with the Rev. Clyde K. Hunter officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.-s
