Samuel A. Kirkpatrick was born in Fountain County, Indiana
August 3, 1853. The greater part of his life was spent in the state of
Illinois. Some 28 years ago he came to Leavenworth County, Kansas where ehe
lived for 12 years. He moved to Clay Center some 16 years ago where he lived
ever sinse (sic). He followed the art of
barbering until five years ago when the condition of his health compelled him
to retire. In the year 1887, April 20 he was married in Leavenworth county (no
name). To this union were born 7 children, six sons one daughter; Lewis A, the
eldest is married and lives in South Dakota; Herschel E, the third son is also
married and live sin Ottawa, Kan. The children at home are: Charles E, Esther,
Otis and Kenneth. All were present except Chester who is at present in an army
hospital in New Jersey, detained on account of sickness. For a number of years
the deceased did not enjoy the best of health but during the last 8 months was
almost helpless being confined continually to his bed. He took to bed July 24,
1917 and gradually kept getting worse until March 24 when he quietly passed
away at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. At
the time of his death he was 64 years 7 months 2 days old. There remains to
continue his loss his wife, 7 children and his many friends and acquaintances.
The funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church, Rev. Dickson of
the First Baptist Church who based his remarks on John 11:25 and Revelations
14:13 officiating. The following songs, Nearer My God to Thee, Jesus, Savior,
Pilot Me, Death is Only a Dream, favorites of the deceased were sung by Mrs. JG
Grimison and Mrs. JG Dickson. The flowers were many and beautiful showing the
high esteem of many friends. Interment took place at Greenwood cemetery. Short
services consisting of prayer and song, Safe in the Arms of Jesus were here
rendered. – kbz
