Services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home for Donald Kirby, 29, of Covington, who drowned about 8 p.m. Saturday while swimming in the Wabash River near the U. S. 136 highway bridge near Covington.
This was the sixth death by drowning in the Wabash River in Fountain County this year.
Mr. Kirby was born Dec. 28, 1931 in Covington.  He was the son of Ralphard (Ross) qnd Effie Noble Kirby.  He married Rosemary Shoaf Beavers Oct. 20, 1954.
He was educated in Covington schools, a vetran of service in the U. S. Army from 1950 to 1953 and the Air Force from 1954 to July 8, 1960.  He had been employed at Harrison Steel Castings Co., Attica, for the past three months.
Surviving with the widow are a son, Ralphard W., eight months, and two stepchildren, Josephine and William; two sisters, Miss Kay Kirby and Mrs. Ellen McFadden, both of Danville, Ill., and three brothers, Ross of Attica, Jerry of Lakeland, Fla., and David, with the U. S. Army in Germany.
The Rev. Douglas Dickey, pastor of the Williamsport Christian Church, officiated at the funeral services and military rites were conducted by the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars at graveside rites in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
