COVINGTON – Walter E. Kiger, age 71, of Covington, died Saturday morning, April 5, at the Americana Nursing Home in Urbana, Ill., where he had been a patient a week. He had been in ill health six months. Mr. Kiger was born July 25, 1897, at Silverwood, the son of James H. and Miranda Simmons Kiger. He married the former Helen Baker, Nov. 17, 1921, and she preceded him in death Feb. 15, 1956. Mr. Kiger was a Covington resident most of his life. He had been employed as a mechanic many years at the Chevrolet-Buick garage in Covington before retiring. He was a member of the Fulton-Banta Post 291, American Legion of Covington, and the Covington Barracks 1995, Veterans of World War I. He was an Army veteran. Survivors include: a son, Kenneth Madden of Fairfield, Ohio; three grandchildren, and two brothers, Everett of Danville, Ill., and Arthur of Kingman. He was preceded in death by one brother, Albert. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home. The Rev. P. J. Hamilton officiated and burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Military rites were conducted at the graveside by the Fulton-Banta Post. – jlr
