HOUGHTON, Mich. — Dr. Rolland O.
Keeling, Jr., 75, Houghton, Mich., died Friday, Oct. 13, 2000 in Portage
Hospital, Hancock. He was born Aug. 13, 1925 in Hillsboro, the son of Rolland
and Mabel Parker Keeling. He married Esther Glascock of Veedersburg on Aug. 18,
1946. After graduating from Hillsboro High School in 1943, he served in the
infantry of the U. S. Army for two years in World War II. He received his A.B.
(1950) in physics from Wabash College and his M.S. (1952) and Ph.D (1954) in
physics from Pennsylvania State University. His research areas included
Mossbauer spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction and crystallography, resulting in a
large number of papers and presentations and one patent. He was a research
physicist with Gulf Research and Development Company in Pittsburgh, Penn. from
1954-1960. In 1961, he joined the faculty at Michigan Technological University.
He was promoted to professor in 1963 and served as department head from 1978
until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Pi Sigma
and several professional societies, Sigma Chi Fraternity, the American Legion
and Grace United Methodist Church, serving in a variety of capacities.
Survivors, besides the wife, include: a daughter, Cynthia (Rich) Yotti; a
daughter-in-law, Marilyn Keeling; three grandchildren, Stephanie Keeling (Pat)
Pou, Lori Ann Keeling (Eric) Buhi and Brian Keeling; and a sister-in-law,
Marjorie Keeling. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, LeRoy P.
Keeling; a son, Stephen Keeling; and two grandsons, Christopher and Matthew
Yotti. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Grace United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Thomas Anderson officiating. Graveside services were held
Oct. 23 in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Plowe Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements. – jlr
