Samuel Clarence Kerns, 58, of Covington Route 1, died at 6:20 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, 1979, at Danville Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he had been a patient since Tuesday. He had been ill two years.

  Mr. Kerns was a member of the Quigle-Palin American Legion Post in Newtown. He served in the Navy during World War II.
  Born Sept. 20, 1920 in Laconia, Ind., he was a son of Samuel D. and Annie Taylor Kerns.

  Survivors include five sons, Lawrence of Lafayette, Richard of Bedford, Ohio, David of Hillsboro, Mark of Crawfordsville and Allie “Butch” of Covington; two daughters, Mrs. Carol Burris of Lafayette and Terry Slinker of Zionsville; a brother, Damon of Corydon; a sister, Mrs. Octavia Beard of Laconia; and nine grandchildren.

  He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

  Services were held Monday at the VA Protestant Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Johnston, a VA chaplain, officiating. Burial was in the VA National Cemetery.
