JOHNSON, Richard - 1886

Source: Covington Peoples Friend 15 April 1886 p1

Last Monday a man named Richard JOHNSON was killed by an AC&S freight train at Attica. The train had stopped and two cars were uncoupled near Clark’s saw mill to be left until other cars could be switched off, the cars thus uncoupled had no brakes and a block of pine was put under the wheels of the rear car to prevent running back. Johnson who was quite deaf, stopped on the track to go to his work and at the same time the engine backed up to get the advantage of “slack” to make a start; this pushed the wheels over the blocks left to hold the cars and two cars started back, knocking Johnson down, crashing his head and shoulders and dragging him nearly 300 feet down the track.  – kbz
