Mrs. Nelle S Johnson, age 69, wife of Dr. W.A. Johnson of Perrysville, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug 31, at her home in Perrysville. Death was attributed to a heart attack. A native of Oklahoma City, Okla, Mrs. Johnson was born there on March 9, 1892, the daughter of Squire and Ida Jane Carithers Shute. She was married to W.A. Johnson, June 28, 1916, and he survives. A 1910 graduate of Perrysville High, Mrs. Johnson taught high school classes at Perrysville and Montezuma, following her graduation from Indiana University in 1914. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. Mrs. Johnson was a past grand matron of the Order of Eastern Start. She was a member of the Perrysville Chapter 302, Order of Eastern Start and had served as the OES representative on the Indiana Masonic Home Board for several years. A member of the Perrysville Methodist Church, Mrs. Johnson held membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Richard Henry Lee Chapter of Covington; Daughters of 1812 of Terre Haute; Daughters of American Colonist of Terre Haute, and was a past president of the 5th District Federated Clubs. She also served and took an active part on the Library Board of Newport for a number of years. Survivors include her husband; two nieces, Mrs. Lois Hanson of Danville, Ill., and Mrs. June Adams of New Goshen; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Harriet, in 1921. Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept 3, at 1p.m. at the Perrysville Methodist Church. The Rev. Floyd J. Crocker of Remington, assisted by the Rev. Kenneth Burns of the Perrysville Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was in the Hicks Cemetery with the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in charge. Chapter 302, Order of Eastern Star, conducted graveside rites.
