JOHNSON, Nancy Roach

Nancy T. (Roach) Johnson was born in Bath County, Kentucky on the 30th day of November, 1824 and died on the 22nd day of November 1915 age 90Y 11M 22D. She was married to Samuel C. Johnson on the 21st of September, 1842 to which union were born 6 children: Mariah, John, Andrew, Mary, Lewis and Albert; 3 of whom together with 12 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 25 great granchildren and 9 step great grandchildren survive to mourn her loss. Also one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Bowman of Missouri. Nancy T. Roach when a small child moved to eastern Indiana with her parents, John & Elizabeth Roach and later to western Indiana. She experienced the joys and hardship and dangers of pioneer life and did her part in changing a wilderness into cultivated fields cultivating communities and beautiful homes. During her long life, her voice and example were always on the side of personal and social virtues and right conduct. No stranger went hungry from her door to wander alone through life she felt food and shelter and rest was his as a matter of right. She united with the Primitive Baptist Church at the age of 17 and clung with unwavering fidelity to that faith for the 74 years of her membership and died in a full belief in the reality of a happy mortal existence with her Savior and the innumerable hosts made lite in the blood of the Lamb. The funeral was held on Thanksgiving Day at Hopewell conducted by Rev. Isaac Whitlock of Terre Haute and burial took place in the old Hopewell Cemetery.
