Bloomingdale—Earl A. Johnson, 39, was killed instantly Monday when a shotgun he was carrying discharged accidentally.
Parke County officials who investigated said Johnson fell while climbing a gate at the edge of Bloomingdale, causing the gun to fire.
He was alone at the time of the accident. The mishap occurred just across the road from the home of Gerald Hastings, his brother-in-law, with whom Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were staying. They had arrived in Bloomingdale from Californian only two weeks ago.
Mr. Johnson formerly resided at Coatesville. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge there.
Surviving are the widow, Mary; three sons, Earl Jr., John Robert, and Marshall; his father, Marshall C. Johnson of Culver City, Calif.; two brothers, J. A. of Glendale, Calif. and W. C. of Crescent City; and two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Ahlefeld of Culver City and Mrs. Margaret Lamb of Crescent City.
Funeral services will be announced later, pending word from relatives in California.
