Springfield - Thomas M. Janeway, 73, Springfield, died at 7:07 a.m. July 28, 1992 at St. John's Hospital. He was born May 7, 1919 near Hillsboro the son of Oscar and May Newlin Janeway. He married Eleanor Davis in 1953. He earned his bachelor's degree from Canterbury College in Indiana, his master's degree from Columbia and master's of public health from the University of NC. He was a Navy commander in the Pacific for four years during WWII, after receiving a commission from the Northwestern University Midshipmen School. He was a faculty member of the department of biological science at Northern Illinois Univeristy for 17 years. He joined the staff of the state Department of Education in 1963 and became director of health education until retiring in 1983. He was deacon and elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church and represented the church in the Great Rivers Presbytery. He was a fellow in the American School Health Association and past president of the Illinois Society of Heatlh Education. He represented the Office of Education on the Dangerous Drugs Commission. He served on the boards of the Aid to Retarded Citizens, Illinois lUng Association and Sr. Citizens of Sangamon County. He was a member of the Luncheon Optimist Club and worked with the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are his wife, Eleanor; a son, Thomas H, Springfield, a daughter Ellen Janeway Brothers, East Hampton, Conn; a grandson; a brother, Samuel of Hillsboro; three sisters, Mildred Hamm, St. Petersburg, Fla; Mabel Terbush, Largo Fla; Mary Ellen Janeway, Indianapolis, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers. Funeral services were held July 31 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. James A. Todd officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Boardman Smith Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
