COVINGTON — Clova Pearl James, 94, Covington, died at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000 in The Waters of Covington. She was born Oct. 8, 1906 in Roachdale, the daughter of William Joseph and Cynthia Alice Russell Dean. She married Carl N. James June 6, 1926. He preceded in death May 11, 1966. A resident of Covington since 1940, she was a former resident of Rockville and Roachdale. She graduated from Roachdale High School. She was the first lady union meat cutter and a lifetime member of Amalgamated Meat Cutters & Butcher Workmen Local 398 of Terre Haute. She was employed at Krogers for 20 years. Later she was a clerk at Norma's Ladies Shop for 18 years. She enjoyed playing euchre and was an avid knitter. She collected blue willow dishes. She was a life member of the First Church of Christ and had attended Benson Chapel United Methodist Church the past five years. Survivors include: a daughter, Virginia M. (Eugene) Smail, Covington; a son, Jerry D. (Carolyn) James, Covington; a brother, Robert 'L. (Ruth) Dean, New Port Richey, Fla.; two grandchildren, Michael Smail and Rebecca (Ken) Baker, both of Covington; six great-grandchildren, Joshua Parkhurst, Heather Robinson, Taryn Shields, Sarabeth Combs, Kendra Baker, Drew Smail, five great-great-grandchildren; two lifelong friends and classmates, Burdine Modlin, Roachdale, and Lucille Brown Hester, New Market; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, a brother, Russell Dean, and a great-granddaughter, Nicole Parkhurst. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with Roger James and the Rev. Michael Dillon officiating. Burial was in Roachdale Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Covington Community Foundation. – jlr
