Sydia (sic - Lydia) Ann Kiger, second daughter of Elias G. Kiger and Ann R. Neal was born near Cates, Indiana Sept 15, 1864 and departed this life at her home in Cates, Indiana April 18, 1922 at the age of 57 years 7 months and 3 days. Her only sister, Emma Jane, died in infancy and her father died in the Union Army soon after Lydia's birth leaving the care of the child to its mother. Lydia spent her girlhood days near where she was born and attended school at the Harveysburg and Hadley school. On July 20, 1882 she was united in marriage with Thomas M. Jackson. To this union were born 7 children: William P; Dottie G; Clodia A; Charles C; Artie R; Lulu E. and Strody H, all of whom were at her side when she departed. She was a firm believer in the lowly Samaritan and her life more than her words showed her belief. She was a faithful mother and was always interested in the welfare and comfort of her children. She leaves to mourn their loss, a mother and husband and 7 children and 17 grandchildren and host of relatives and friends. Among her last words were these: "Be good men and women." After a short service at the home at 10 o'clock Friday morning the remains were taken to her former home at Kingman where funeral services were held at the United Brethern Church Friday April 21, conducted by Rev. Paul W. Eddingfield of New Ross, Indiana after which she was laid to rest in the Harveysburg Cemetery.
