Army Lt.Col. Joseph Irvin, age 47, a graduate of Veedersburg High School, died at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. from cancer. Lieutenant Colonel Irvin was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., Apr 24, 1920, the son of Mack and Ina Caldwell Irvin. He attended the Veedersburg grade schools and was graduated from the high school there. After graduating he studied law at Purdue University, West Lafayette, and Indiana University, Indianapolis campus. In 1942 he entered the U.S. Army Signal corps and served as a private at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. He completed Officers Candidate School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, and commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1943 and he was assigned to the Department of Defense, Washington D.C. as a cryptographer. As a signal officer he served at Army Air Force Bases in New Orleans, La, San Antonio, Tx, Spokane, Wash, and Tokyo, Japan. He returned to civilian life in 1948 to continue his law studies at Loyola University in New Orleans. In 1949 he re-entered the Army serving with the Counter Intelligence Corps as a signal security officer at Frankfurt and Stuttgart, Germany, Taiwan, Formosa, and Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. In 1954 he was assigned to the Chief Signal Office, U.S. Army, Pentagon, where he remained until 1960 when he was sent to Seoul, Korea. He returned a year later to serve with the Army Security Agency, Arlington Hall Station, Va. In November 1964, Lt. Col. Irvin retired from the Army and assumed the position of Technical Liaison Officer at Philco Corp. Rosslyn, Va. In June 1965 he became Communication Specialist at the Defense Communications Agency, Department of Defense, the Pentagon, Washington D.C. He had been working as communications coordinator for the Gemini program before his illness. During his years of service with the army, LTC Irvin was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Occupation Medals for Japan and German, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. He recently received the Sustained Superior Performance Certificate for his work as communications coordinator for the Gemini Space program. Surviving are: his wife Naomi Ade Irvin of the home address, 3919 Wexford Dr, Kensington, Md; two sons, Joseph H, 24 of Silver Springs, Md, and Michael 18 living at home and a student at St John's College High School, Washington, D.C. He also is survived by: two brothers, Dr Thomas C Irvin of Silver Springs, Md and James in Calif. and two sisters, Mrs Fred Badders of Bronson, Mich, and Mrs Lynn Miller of Gardenia, Calif. The funeral Mass was said at Fort Myer Chapel at 8:45 a.m. Friday, April 21. Graveside rites were conducted at the Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery in Lafayette at 10 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Seraph Zeltz officiated and arrangements were by the Ladis Loy Mortuary of Lafayette.

Veedersburg- Graveside rites are being conducted at 10 o'clock this morning at Rest Haven Memorial Cemetery in Lafayette for Lt. Col. Joseph Irvin, 47, who died Friday at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C. after an illness of one year. He was born in Veedersburg, a son of Mack and Ina Caldwell Irvin. His marriage was to Naomi Ade in Lafayette. He entered the U S Army after graduating from Veedersburg High School. He retired in 1964 but later returned to active duty. Surviving are the widow; two sons, Joseph of Springs Valley, Md and Michael, at home; three brothers and two sisters.

Services were Friday at the Ft Myer Chapel for Joseph A Irvin, 47, of Kensington, Md, a retired lieutenant colonel of the Signal Corps, a former resident of Covington, Ind, who died last Wednesday at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington D.C. Burial was in the Rest Haven Cemetery at Lafayette, Ind. Lt Col Irvin was a graduate of Covington High School and studied law at Purdue University at Lafayette and Indiana University at Indianapolis. Surviving are his widow, Naomi Ade Irvin of Kensington; two sons, Joseph H of Silver Springs, Md and Michael, at home; a brother, Thomas C of Silver Springs and two sisters, Mrs Fred Badders of Bronson, Mich, and Mrs Lynn Miller of Gardenia, Calif.
