HUNTER, Sam

Sam Hunter was found dead in bed in a hotel in Reynolds Tuesday afternoon and Dr. Cray, of Monticello, coroner of White county, who was called to view the body, returned a verdict to the effect that Hunter had died from the effects of an overdose of morphine taken with suicidal intent. It seems that Hunter had been in hiding from the sheriff of Warren county, who had a warrant for his arrest. Some time ago Hunter had stabbed Joel Briggs in a saloon in Williamsport and it was for this crime that the warrant was issued by the grand jury. Hunter was quite well known and spent most of his time acting as John F. Judy’s agent. He had been indicted several times on minor charges. It seems that when Hunter learned the grand jury returned this verdict and he was informed that the sheriff was looking for him, he decided to put himself out of the way and took the fatal dose of morphine. The announcement of his suicide created a sensation in Warren county .where he had a wide acquaintance. Hunter was about 48 years old and leaves a widow and five children. He was a member of one of the oldest and most prominent families in Warren county and was related by marriage to John F. Judy of Judyville.
