Dorothy M. Hughes, 93, of West Lafayette passed away March 15, 2014 at Cumberland Pointe Health Campus in West Lafayette.  She had been in failing health the past 2 weeks.  She was a resident at the facility for 11 ½ years. She was born June 7, 1920 in Mellott, IN to Arthur and Juanita Waterman.  She graduated from Mellott HS in 1938.  Dorothy married Robert Hughes in Hawthorne, CA in 1946. She lived on the family farm until she moved to Lafayette. In 1989 she married Harold Woodrow (deceased).  Dorothy is survived by twins, son and daughter John R. Hughes (Constance) and Joan Hughes (Max Bell) both of West Lafayette.  Also surviving are step children: Stepson Kevin (Marilyn) Woodrow, Covington, IN and step daughter Linda (Fred) Rayburn of Covington IN. Also surviving are three grandchildren: Monica Harris (Jerry) Lafayette; Kevin Hughes (Crystal) Delphi; Lisa Garrott (John) of Huntington; six great grandchildren and a nephew Dick (Peggy) Risinger, Altadena, California.  Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hughes in 1986; her parents, Arthur and Juanita Waterman; and her sister, Lucy Risinger.  Dorothy was a member of the Mellott Church of Christ and attended Grace United Methodist Church when she moved in 1996.  In 1939 Dorothy enrolled in the St. E. School of Nursing for three years and graduated as a RN in 1942.  She worked at Chicago Heights for two years.  In 1944 she enlisted in the Navy at Great Lakes as a Navy nurse and worked there prior to being assigned in San Diego, CA during WWII. She was discharged in March 1946.  Dorothy worked for The National Columnist (Dr Crane) in Mellott for 15 years.  Dorothy was a member of the Women’s Veterans Organization and the American Legion. Dorothy became a Volunteer for the Cancer Outreach Group after surviving a bout with cancer. While living in Mellott she spent much of her spare time helping those in need and caring for the sick. During her years in Mellott she worked for several doctors and several community hospitals. She served many individuals as a private nurse. She along with the help of her nursing friends started the first Blood Bank in Mellott and surrounding towns. They took blood samples at the local firehouse, maintained lists of people by blood type who could donate and assisted when blood was needed at the hospitals. She was a volunteer with Easter Seals and American Heart Association.  Once a nurse, always a nurse, that was Dorothy.  Upon moving to Cumberland Pointe in 2002 she continued her nursing helping other residence (much of which was appreciated by their children).  She continued to be a nurse to her dying day.  Commander, you’ll always be remembered.  Her family wishes to express thanks and gratitude to St. Elizabeth Hospice, the staff at IU Arnett Hospital in the ICU/PCU, staff at Cumberland Pointe Health Campus, Rev. Larry Johnson, <Grace United Methodist Church, Father Buckles and volunteer Toni Krane at Blessed Sacrament Church, Juel Harris (Caregiver for 15 years), Linda Bowman and Glenn Tompkins, Jeff and Julie Farmer, Danny and Joyce Culver and extended family and friends that Dorothy met during her stay at the facility.  A memorial service will be held Saturday March 22, 2014 in the Cumberland Pointe Health Campus Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Dorothy will be cremated and private graveside service held at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery in Hillsboro IN. Memorial contributions (checks) may be made out to “The Community Foundation of Greater Lafayette,” 114 E.
