COVINGTON — Presley Dean Howard,
74, a resident of Covington, died at 5:20 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000 in V.A.
Medical Center, Danville, Ill. He had been a patient for 16 days and ill for 2
1/2 years. He was born Nov. 18, 1925 in Cates, Fountain County, the son of
Homer Presley and Viola Faye Starkey Howard. He married Florence Marie VanLaere
Sept. 4, 1948 in Attica. She survives. He lived in the Pence community for 50
years and had been a resident of Covington since 1989. He graduated from Attica
High School in 1943. He was a construction worker for 45 years and worked from
the Labor Local #274 of Lafayette, retiring in 1989. He served in the U. S.
Navy in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the F & AM Lodge
#352 of West Lebanon. He was past master of both the West Lebanon and Hedrick
lodges. He was a member of O.E.S. Chapter #162 of West Lebanon. He was a life
member of V.F.W Post #3318 of Attica and a member of the Labor Local #274 of
Lafayette. Survivors, besides the wife, include: two sons, John A. (Angeline)
Howard, Mandan, N.D. and James M. (Diane) Howard, Cutler; a brother, Donald Lee
(Judy) Howard, Williamsburg, Va.; seven grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Richard
Lee in 1996. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday in Fisher Funeral Home,
Williamsport. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington, with military
graveside rites. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American
Heart Association. – jlr
