– Ruth Marie Hoagland, 83, Covington, died at 4 a.m. Feb. 28, 1994, at United
Samaritans Medical Center, Logan Campus, Danville, Ill. She was born March 24,
1910, in Fountain County, the daughter of Thomas and Lucy Lutishie Royce
Hankins. She was married to John Clinton Hoagland on Aug. 3, 1926 in Lafayette.
He preceded in death on April 27, 1983. She was a resident of Covington since
1935, moving here from Tippecanoe County, West Point area. She was a member of
the Covington United Methodist Church, Win One Class, United Methodist Women,
Troy Chapter #145 OES, Past Worthy Matron and was also secretary for the
chapter for several years, and the Republican Club. Surviving, are: four
daughters, Alvina VanPelt, Bismark, Ill.; Helen Louise (Howard) VanLeer,
Fresno, Calif.; Kathryn Marie (Shirley) Hines, Covington; Naomi Hoagland, Route
1, Cayuga; four sons, John Richard (Lois) Hoagland, Burgaw, N.C.; George Thomas
(Leota) Hoagland, Yucca, Calif.; Nathaniel Reynolds (Eva) Hoagland, San Diego,
Calif.; Harry Herbert (Betty) Hoagland, Danville, Ill.; two brothers, Thomas V.
Hankins, Route 2, Veedersburg; Herbert Hankins, Route 2, Veedersburg; and 15
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson. Funeral
services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Covington United Methodist Church
with the Rev. Allen Phillips and Paul Kent officiating. Visitation will be from
3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with Eastern Star Services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in
Mount Hope Cemetery, Covington. Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, is in charge of
arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Win One Class. – jlr
